The fight for voting rights (suffrage) got its start at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. After continued protests (Alice Paul protested at the White House, was arrested, and went on a hunger strike in prison), women finally gained national suffrage with the passage of the 19th Amendment, which went into effect in 1920.
