Brown v. Board of Education
In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in schools violated the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. This overturned the “separate but equal” ruling of Plessy v. Fergusonthat had permitted segregation.
Montgomery Bus Boycott
In 1955, after Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving her seat to a white man on a segregated bus, Martin Luther King, Jr. led a boycott of the bus system until the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on buses was unconstitutional.

When nine black students tried to go to a white school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957, the governor used National Guard troops to stop the students from entering the high school. The next day, President Eisenhower used his power as Commander in Chief to use the military to help the students get into the school.
