Prohibition
Protests from the temperance movement (a movement against alcohol, often led by women concerned about the negative effects of drinking) led to the 18th Amendment (ratified in 1920), which prohibited (outlawed) the manufacture and sale of alcohol. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment.
Organized Crime
During prohibition, organized crime (the mafia) increased because people still wanted to buy alcohol. Prohibition showed that unpopular laws are hard to enforce, and people often went to speakeasies (secret bars) to get alcohol. Prohibition was repealed (removed) by the 21st Amendment.
