Nuremburg Trials
After WWII ended, Nazi leaders were put on trial in Nuremburg to hold individuals accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity (the Holocaust).
United Nations
The UN was created after WWII so that the countries of the world could work together to prevent war and find peaceful solutions to international problems.
Berlin Airlift
When the Soviets cut-off access West Berlin, America and Great Britain airlifted millions of supplies into West Berlin to support the people. The Soviets backed down, but later (1963) built the Berlin Wall to divide East and West Berlin.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
During the Cold War, America and other Western countries formed NATO for collective security and to oppose communist expansion. NATO is an example of America taking a more active role in world affairs after WWII.
Cold War / Containment
After WWII, America (capitalist/democratic) and the Soviet Union (communist) engaged in a Cold War (no direct fighting) over global influence and power. America’s main foreign policy goal was to CONTAIN the spread of communism.
