Red Scare / Palmer Raids
After the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, the US was worried about communists (reds) entering the US. Attorney General Palmer conducted the “Palmer Raids” to arrest and deport immigrants suspected to be communists or anarchists.
National Origins Act / Immigration Quotas
Although the US had allowed “open” immigration to fuel industrialization, increased nativism and fear of foreigners led the US to restrict immigration by establishing quotas (limits) on immigrants from certain countries.
Sacco and Vanzetti
These Italian immigrants were executed for murder although the evidence was weak and the trial was controversial. Their execution symbolized the anti-immigrant and anti-anarchists feelings that were present in America during the 1920s.
