Warren Court
When Earl Warren was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Court made many decisions that increased the rights of individuals (Brown v. Board of Ed, Loving v. Virginia) and the rights of the accused (Mapp v. Ohio, Gideon v. Wainwright, Escobedo v. Illinois, Miranda v. Arizona).
Miranda v. Arizona
The Supreme Court declared that a person must be read his/her rights during the time of arrest. If the police don’t read the Miranda Rights, statements made by the prisoner cannot be used in court. This case expanded the rights of the accused.
