Black Panthers
Many African Americans were frustrated with the lack of progress after the Civil Rights Movement. The Panthers set up armed patrols of black neighborhoods to prevent police brutality. They also set up food and health programs for the poor.
Cesar Chavez
Chavez fought for the rights of migrant farm workers, who were usually Latino. Chavez led boycotts and strikes to pressure large farm companies to provide better pay, hours, and benefits.
Red Power / American Indian Movement
Native Americans used occupations at places like Alcatraz, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office, and Wounded Knee, South Dakota to protest for rights and for greater control of Native American affairs.
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring
Carson’s book exposed the environmental dangers of pesticides (chemicals that kill insects). The book helped lead to the modern environmentalist movement and led to increased environmental regulations of the environment.
