World War II
The US fought to stop the totalitarian aggression of Germany and Japan. The US fought the war on two fronts (Europe and the Pacific). The D-Day invasion at Normandy (1944) helped the Allies defeat Hitler (1945). Japan was defeated with the atomic bomb.

The D-Day invasion (at Normandy, France in June 1944) was important to the outcome of World War II because it opened a new Allied front in Europe and forced Germany to fight the Russians in the East and the Americans/British in the West.
